Where should I live? Compare places by what matters to you

Moving is one of the few decisions that changes almost everything at once: money, work, friends, even the weather in your mood. That's exactly why it helps to put it on a scale.

Quick checklist

  1. Price your real month. Rent is only part of it. Add transport, groceries, taxes and the flights home you'll take.
  2. Separate career from job. One offer is not a city. Ask where your second and third job would come from.
  3. Weigh your people honestly. Distance from family and close friends is the thing people most underrate before a move and miss most after.
  4. Visit on a normal Tuesday. Holidays flatter every city. Spend a grey weekday there: commute at rush hour, buy groceries, sit in a café.
  5. Think five years out. Where would you want to be if you had a partner, kids, or a remote job? Score for the life you're heading to.

Why weights beat pro-and-con lists

A pro-and-con list counts reasons as if they were equal. They aren't. 'Near my sister' and 'nice coffee shops' should not cancel out. Weighting forces the question: how much more does this matter than that? Most people discover one or two criteria carry the decision.

Try the heart check

When the scale names a winner, notice your first reaction. A quick 'oh no' is useful information. It usually means a criterion is missing, like the feeling of belonging somewhere. Add it, weigh again, and you'll trust the answer more.
